A focus on people – Lohmann implements active environmental management

We have always regarded the linking of environmental protection, quality and work safety as a self-evident responsibility. For this reason, an environmental policy has been formulated in an environmental management handbook, for the purpose of DIN EN ISO 14001, which takes account of the environmental effects of our company. After all, to Lohmann, environmental action means only offering products globally, which have been produced, transported, used and disposed of in a manner that is of a high quality and safe for people and the environment. The focus of all of our activities is on people.

As a member of the Verband der chemischen Industrie e.V., we take part in the global "responsible care" initiative. In the interest of sustainable operations, the particular areas of hazard prevention, work safety, transport safety and environmental protection are constantly put to the test. This means actively fulfilling environmental protection conditions and, apart from this, taking advantage of the constant advancement and new development of products for the efficient improvement of environmental protection. Environmental management systems and effective programmes for reducing emissions and waste, as well as for protecting resources, are measures for a consequential further development of environmental protection.

Lohmann environmental policy

Lohmann is one of the leading providers of double-sided adhesive tapes. The management is conscious of the environmental relevance of the company and actively carries out environmental protection, due to its co-responsibility to preserve natural resources.
Economic, profit-oriented development and operational environmental protection should not be understood as conflicting goals, but rather, as a joint task.
The environmental aspects are regularly reviewed and evaluated in order to implement effective, operational environmental protection measures. These mainly include product development, the selection of raw materials and suppliers, production methods, logistics, supply and cleaning systems, as well as disposal:

With the development of new products or production methods, we consider the associated environmental effects at an early stage.

We aim for the use of optimum raw materials and intermediate products and design our products such that they can be recycled after use.

In the context of selecting our suppliers, we also pay attention to their commitment to operational environmental protection.

We optimise our production processes with respect to lowest possible emissions, low energy consumption and low consumption of resources. We regularly monitor environmental polluting emissions.

We intend to keep environmental pollution from waste, sewage and noise as low as possible.

Beyond compliance with the relevant environmental regulations and laws, we pursue continuous improvement of operational environmental protection.
We minimise the consequences of potential accidents by installing suitable safety technology and providing a factory fire service with specialist knowledge regarding chemical accidents. Our safety measures correspond, as a minimum, with the state-of-the-art.
We ensure that the contractual partners operating on our company premises also comply with our environmental codes.
We promote self-responsible, environmentally aware action by our employees by informing, training and encouraging them to bring in own ideas and solution recommendations.
We inform the public, particularly our neighbourhood, about our activities and the associated environmental effects (e.g. through neighbourhood days) and maintain a relationship to the authorities, which is characterised by openness and trust.

Environmental goals

For the purpose of our environmental policy, adequate environmental goals have been defined, which account for the main environmental effects of the company. The realisation of these goals is substantiated through suitable measures, responsibilities and deadlines.
These include, for example:

Benchmarking environmental standards – exchange of experiences with suppliers, carrying out of supplier audits with selected suppliers

Materials that are hazardous to water – reduction of hazard at the application locations – use of additional collecting pans for materials that are hazardous to water

Reduction of production waste – multiple use of materials

Increase in the share of recycled materials – training of employees to consequentially separate waste

Reduction of solvent emissions – setup and commissioning of an additional thermal exhaust air cleaning system

Reduction of cooling water consumption – pre-cooling of the boiler water/blowdown water with air

In order to ensure effective environmental management, these environmental goals and measures are defined through the publication of the tasks, responsibilities and authorities. We also provide the necessary personnel resources, technologies and funds for the environmental management system.

Investment in the future

A large number of the investments carried out during the past years have shown a noticeable improvement for the environment, as well as a rationalisation effect. In addition to the noticeable reduction of emissions, measures were also promoted, which enable careful handling of the resources of energy, water and the employed raw materials. State-of-the-art filling level measurement technology in the tank farms, as well as optimally adapted equipment, allow failure-free supply with fluid raw materials. At the production systems, developments have been implemented, which significantly reduced energy consumption and cooling water flow rate, in addition to emissions. Through the use of various handling devices, the physical demands on the employees were noticeably reduced and thus also the risk of accidents. All work stations in adhesive tape production are inspected and evaluated with respect to the causes and conditions that could lead to accidents at work and hazards to health.

Open dialogues

Our focus is on the extensive communication of our environmental policy and the goals and measures anchored in our environmental management system. To us, responsible action means the creation of a climate of trust. We ensure this through an open dialogue between customers, companies, employees, neighbours, consumers and authorities.
