Beyond adhesion to skin

February 20th and 21st in Munich sees the In-adhesives Symposium on “Innovation in Adhesives and their Applications”.

2018_Lourdes Pastor-Pérez.jpgThe symposium is an annual event where technical experts from Industry and Academia meet to present and discuss topics specific to the understanding and advancement of adhesive technology. Attending this year on behalf of Lohmann is Medical R&D Manager Dr. Lourdes Pastor-Perez. She will be presenting a paper titled “MEDICAL ADHESIVE TAPES: BEYOND ADHESION TO SKIN”. The use of adhesive tapes in medical devices are becoming ever more popular, not only because of their primary functions such as fixing dressings, protecting wounds and securing devices in place but also because when used in combination with other materials they can support the healing processes, allow gentle removal, improve moisture management or enhance patient comfort.

When designing medical adhesive tapes many questions arise which to answer demands a profound knowledge of how skin functions while also understanding how adhesion science can be used to overcome skin-bonding challenges. Lohmann is one of the pioneering forces in adhesive tape technology, especially in the medical branch. The Bonding Engineers know: Only by selecting the correct combination of components the product will be optimized to meet the design needs of the medical device while keeping skin safe. On the other side, testing the performance of medical tapes is one of the major challenges constantly faced by the adhesive industry. For this purpose Lohmann presents the “Smart bonding approach” focused on designing adhesive properties, matching advanced materials for technical requirements and skin safety and developing customized characterization methods mimicking skin and application conditions.
